The anime is actually my favorite. After watching it about 3 times (twice 1999 and once 2011, however, I watched some episodes of the latter multiple times), I decided to read the manga. Hunter x Hunter is my favorite thing in the world.
Hunter x Hunter tells the adventures of four young friends: Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leorio.
Minor spoilers of the first few volumes, nothing major.
Hunters are the elite warriors. They have many privileges and can do some great achievements like discovering new species, capturing the most notorious criminals and discovering ruins.
It all starts when Gon Freecss decides to take the Hunter exam following his father's footsteps. After discovering that his father is the best hunter in the world and despite his aunt Mito-san's complaints, he's going to pass the exam and then do everything to find his father, Ging. In his journey, he befriends Kurapika, the last survivor of the Kurta Clan. He wants to avenge his people by becoming a blacklist Hunter, hunters who track down the most dangerous and wanted criminals. His people were massacred by the Phantom Troupe after stealing their scarlet eyes. One of the seven most beautiful things in the world. He also meets Leorio who wants to become a Doctor but unfortunately, needs money, so the Hunter exam seemed like a great opportunity to help him achieving his goal. And finally, Killua aka my favorite character and my anime crush, a former pro assassin. Not just any ex-assassin, his family is the most known in this field and unluckily for him, he's the favorite promising child.
He also encounters Hisoka, a creepy hot weird magician, and a very strong guy. Everyone seems to avoid him. And well, who can blame them?
After watching the whole series, the exam looks so easy, honestly. Gon always finds people put in his way to help him to be stronger. No one can guess how our main characters will transform. We'll meet some outstanding fighters like Biscuit, Kite, Zeno and Silva, the greatest hunter Netero (the chairman) and some wicked villains like the beautiful Pitou, Feitan (I really like him even if he's evil) and Chrollo. Plus some other great characters who will steal your heart like Meruem and Alluka.
I'll talk a little more about the characters before moving to the plot:
When you have a huge set of characters (I already mentioned tons of names), you worry they'll be ignored, background decor, forgotten. What amazes me is how I still remember every person even though it's been a year since I last read/watched Hunter x Hunter. They're unforgettable. If you're a villain kind of person or any kind of person, you won't help but fall in love with the villains Togashi created. I love the phantom troupe even though they ruined my dear Kurapika's life. Their relationship, its complexity, their personalities will blow your mind. The chimera Ants villains (and I beg to differ) comes close, but we spend more time with the PT so we get to know them more. I can't help but mention Bomber, he annoyed to end. I despised him (not in a good way, like the way you're supposed to hate villains) because he annoyed me as a character to end. I think Togashi could've done better but hey, that's only one in the midst of hundreds (or less).
- Gon: he's ready to do anything for his friends. He might be hasty but he's so kind and courteous. People can't help but like him. He has a gentle heart. I'm telling you his father is extremely intelligent and will probably do anything to avoid meeting his kid and his friends especially. It might be very awkward, you know. Gon undergoes an amazing transformation, like most shonen main characters, he isn't the brightest but that doesn't stop him from stealing your heart. His adventure reshapes him. The friendships he makes, the experience they pass, will influence his personality a lot.
- Killua: he's a Zoldyck, his family members are the most famous assassins of the Underworld. And he is so cute. His most famous word is Baka XD. Anyway, he's a rebel who hates their lifestyle. So he's craving his own way defying mostly his older brother Illumi. When he left he hit his mother. She cried. Tears of joy, her boy is a grown up now! That's how perfect his family is. So basically Hunter x Hunter is not only my favorite thing in the world but also features my most loved character ever. He's sharp, smart, vicious, assassin (was at a time but who cares?), will do anything to his friends (all of the squad will for that matter), kind (kinda), strong... I can talk about how perfect my little boy is all day.
- Kurapika: he's (yes HE, unlike the popular first impression the blondie isn't a girl) an intelligent fellow. He will do the impossible to achieve his goals, but he won't let his disdain misguide him. Think and then act. "Sometimes silence is the best answer." When I watched Yu Yu Hakusho, I noticed the uncanny similarities between Togashi's characters, Kurapika and Kurama. There's so similar, one might dislike it but I loved it! I like his resolve. How he never (well almost never) lets his anger to control him but uses his mind even in the most pressing situations. It's his best trait in my opinion.
-Leorio: he might be a bit naive (he has his moments) but he's a good guy. Yeah, sometimes he might be stupid but in every squad, someone has to be like this I guess. His past helped him to become a better person, one who wants to help the weak. I like him the least. However, I can only say he really gets better later!
- Hisoka: Gon is his pray and if you interfere he'll kill you. He's my number 2 favorite character in this series. He gets turned on by strong people yet I can't help but see him as a good guy, after all, because of him, Gon will be stronger. I'm not sure if he's a magician and/or a clown. But he is very strong. And yeah, his creepiness is hilarious. He's like an anti-hero. I'm not sure if he's straight because even though I ship him with Machi, a phantom troupe member, he surely has bisexual vibes. He's just a sociopath. And I adore him for that.

Wow, that's a pretty accurate list, I think I'll use it in my future anime reviews (rating over 5).
Needless to say, I'll need to explain some points.
In many anime, we see the character just strong (especially shonen), rarely trains, and miraculously wins. This is not the case. We see Gon grow as a character, physically and mentally. In fact, he loses more than he wins even in important situations. I really liked that. I'm someone who loves action, fighting, blood, and I got all of that. The story has 8 arcs (counting the one in the manga), each handles different problems (will discuss them later) which allowed the story to cover different topics. It definitely questions your ethics, you won't know on which political side you stand, you'll shed tears for the villains (and sometimes want them to win). You'll watch episode after episode until you have finished all the 148 (146 not counting the recaps) and only want more.
It may seem childish and for kids at first. My friend told me it was hard to get into at first (of course, not for me lol) and I can see why. At first, the characters are introduced. The atmosphere is being built and you might expect sunshine and flowers. You can't be further from the truth. It gets savage and complicated. Especially with the Nen system. The most developed magic system I came across. Now looking back, I'm pretty sure I didn't understand what aura was or how exactly each person is classified. It took me a while to digest it when I was way older.
Honestly, many might throw their prejudgements and avoid watching this gem. It's childish, immature, stupid, they're 12 year olds! Look at their smiles! It's so long... Haha. These people don't know what they're missing. It only keeps getting better. The Yorknew and Chimera ant offers two of the best stories in shonen ever. They handle revenge, war, secret schemes, sacrifices, brotherhood even among the most wicked. Nothing is black and white. Nothing is predictable, the main character will kick everyone's ass? Not Gon. Not even Killua. Power comes in an illogical way? Not here. They undergo a hell of a training.
Do you like tournaments? Do you like aliens (or inhuman things yet are like people)? Do you want to see a game? Do you want politics? You to see treacherous brothers, psycho relatives, and numerous ways of torcher? A devasting love story? A plot you can't in a million years predict? Strategies that will bore you to death but you will be rewarded by the best fights ever? You name it and I guarantee that you will find it here.
Yoshihiro Togashi suffers from back pain. Hunter x Hunter started in 1998, Naruto in 1999. While HxH has only 360 released chapters, Naruto 700. Might I also add that Naruto copied Hunter x Hunter?! Anyway, you can only guess the pain of waiting. Some chapters were released last year (been on hiatus since 2014) and now we're still waiting for chapter 361. It's killing us the fans.
The art isn't the best. If we had to give up Togashi's drawing style and have the rest of the story, I wouldn't mind. I mean, of course, no one will catch the characters' impressions like he does (especially, Hisoka), I'm ready to sacrifice it to know what will happen.
Many complain from his writing style, I have to admit, it gets so bad at some point. He obviously suffers from back pain but he wants to do his best. I respect him for that. I'm thinking about rereading it, though. I missed it so much. I want to buy it some day. And saying I want to reread it is something because I never reread books.
PS: Some names in my review differ a little from the manga. I used the names of the anime.
I'm really grateful for a dear friend. If she reads this, she'll know herself. Thanks, S for reminding me of how great this show is.
